All my research and writing since my first publication in 1965 have been leading me to what I hope will be my final study. Half completed before I began the present study, it treats of the 1523 Nuremberg Imperial Edict that not only politicized the Protestant Reformation, but – while mandating the preaching of the Gospel – forbade any changes to be made in the practices of the Christian faith and church servicers. It was for this reason that reformers like Martin Bucer and political figures like Philip, Duke of Hesse could argue at the1530 Diet of Augsburg that confronting the Catholic Church with the scriptural teachings of Christ without allowing the church’s practices to be brought into conformity with the new teachings, could only lead to civil unrest and war. And so, it had. If I live long enough to complete the study, I shall call it: Imperial Law and Holy Gospel – with apologies to Martin Luther!
